Class Descriptions
Dance Project: the School at City Arts Performance Groups
Ages 5 - Adult
Dance Project: the School at City Arts offers performance classes for ages 5+. These classes
emphasize learning choreography quickly and participating in a multitude of community
performances in venues such as retirement communities, schools, and local events and fairs.
Dancers in these performance groups must be enrolled in an approved technique class.
Regular attendance in required!
Mini Dance Troupe (MDT) ages 5-6
Junior Dance Troupe (JDT) ages 7-9
Tween Dance Troupe (TWDT) ages 10-12
Teen Dance Troupe (TDT) ages 13-17
Adult Dance Troupe (ADT) 18+, offered in both ballet & modern
Class Attire:
Female: leotard (any color), tights or leggings, ballet skirt (optional), pink ballet shoes, hair
in a bun
Male: Fitted shirt and leggings, black ballet shoes
Dancing with Tots
Ages: 1-2 yrs
This is a parent / child class where parents participate with their children. Dancing with
Tots is designed to encourage parents in working with their children on gross motor skills
and creative expression. Props will be used to encourage balance, coordination and a
general sense of fun. Interactive music is used to enhance the learning experience.
Class Attire: comfortable clothes, no shoes needed
Creative Movement I
Ages: 3-4 yrs
This class offers a fun introduction to dance, encouraging awareness of the body as a means
of expression. Students will learn spatial awareness, musicality and abstract movement
through vivid imagery and activities. Props will be used to encourage balance, coordination
and a general sense of fun. Interactive music is used to enhance the learning experience.
Students will be introduced to basic ballet vocabulary through the use of movement stories
and imagery.
Class Attire: comfortable clothes, leotard (any color), footless tights, no shoes needed
Creative Movement II
Ages: 4-5 yrs
Creative Movement II builds upon skills learned in Creative Movement I. Creative
Movement II will dive deeper into the elements of dance, including use of tempo, level,
shape, weight, pathways of travel, energy. Students will continue to build both fine and
gross motor skills through specific guided movements such as skipping, hopping on one foot
and leaps. Students will be introduced to new vocabulary as their understanding and
readiness increases.
Class Attire: comfortable clothes, leotard (any color), footless tights, no shoes needed
Pre Ballet
Ages: 5-6 yrs
Pre Ballet teaches the basics of ballet technique in a traditionally structured ballet class
format. Students will work on ballet vocabulary, positions of the feet and arms, flexibility
and coordination. Class will consist of barré work, floor progressions, and short center
sequences.
Class Attire:
Female: leotard (any color), tights or leggings, ballet skirt (optional), pink ballet shoes, hair
in a bun
Male: Fitted shirt and leggings, black ballet shoes
Ballet I
Ages: 7-9 yrs, 10-12 yrs, 13-17 yrs
Ballet I explores the basics of ballet technique. Students will work on ballet vocabulary,
positions of the feet and arms, flexibility and coordination. Emphasis will be placed on
proper alignment, musicality, flexibility and strength. Class will consist of barré work, floor
progressions, and short center sequences.
Class Attire:
Female: leotard (any color), tights or leggings, ballet skirt (optional), pink ballet shoes, hair
in a bun
Male: Fitted shirt and leggings, black ballet shoes
Ballet II
Ages: 7-9 yrs
Ballet II builds on the skills and vocabulary introduced in Ballet I. Students will increase
their skill level with more intricate movements, sequences, and spatial patterns. Class will

Ballet II/Pre-Pointe
Ages: 10-12 yrs, 13-17 yrs
Ballet II/Pre-Pointe builds on the skills and vocabulary introduced in Ballet I and
additionally emphasizes building the strength and coordination necessary for pointe work.
Students will increase their skill level with more intricate movements, sequences, and spatial
patterns. Class will consist of barré work, floor progressions, and center sequences.

Ballet II/Pointe
Ages: 13-17 yrs
Ballet II/Pointe builds on the skills and vocabulary introduced in Ballet I and additionally
emphasizes building the strength and coordination necessary for pointe work. Students will
increase their skill level with more intricate movements, sequences, and spatial patterns.
Class will consist of barré work, floor progressions, and center sequences.
* Instructor placement into this class is required. Additional ballet class strongly
recommended.

Jazz I
Ages: 7-9, 10-12, 13-17
Jazz I introduces the basics of jazz technique. Class will increase student's flexibility,
strength and coordination, and additionally teach proper technique for leaps and turns.
Class will consist of a warm-up, floor progressions, and short center sequences.
Class Attire:
Female: leotard (any color), fitted pants (jazz or yoga), jazz shoes (oxfords or jazz sneakers),
hair neatly out of face
Males: Fitted shirt and pants, jazz shoes (oxfords or jazz sneakers)
Jazz II
Ages: 7-9, 10-12, 13-17
Jazz II explores varying genres of jazz dance including classical, contemporary, and musical
theater. Students will build upon the basics of jazz technique. Emphasis will be placed of
rhythm, dynamics and style. Class will consist of a warm-up, floor progressions, and center
sequences.
Class Attire:
Female: leotard (any color), fitted pants (jazz or yoga), jazz shoes (oxfords or jazz sneakers),
hair neatly out of face
Males: Fitted shirt and pants, jazz shoes (oxfords or jazz sneakers)
Tap I
Ages: 5-6 yrs, 7-9, 10-12, 13-17
Tap I teaches basic tap vocabulary and movements. Emphasis will be placed on rhythm and
coordination. Students will learn simple steps across the floor and in the center.
Class Attire:
Female: leotard (any color), fitted pants (jazz or yoga), tap shoes, hair neatly out of face
Males: Fitted shirt and pants, tap shoes
Tap II
Ages: 7-9, 10-12, 13-17
Tap II builds on the skills learned in Tap I, to explore more complex rhythmic structures
and movements. Students will learn longer movement sequences in the center and across the
floor.
Class Attire:
Female: leotard (any color), fitted pants (jazz or yoga), tap shoes, hair neatly out of face
Males: Fitted shirt and pants, tap shoes
Modern I
Ages: 13-17 yrs
Modern I teaches the basics of modern dance technique. Emphasis will be placed on body
awareness, moving through the space with ease, weight shifting and using oppositional body
halves. Students will increase coordination, improve alignment and create a stronger
mind/body connection. Class will include a warm-up, floor progressions and short center
combinations.
Class Attire:
Female: leotard (any color), fitted pants (jazz or yoga), long sleeve shirt, no shoes, hair
neatly out of face
Males: Fitted shirt and pants, long sleeve shirt, no shoes
Modern II
Ages: 13-17 yrs
Modern II further explores the Modern dance aesthetic and approach to movement.
Emphasis continues with body awareness, movement efficiency, weight shifting and use of
oppositional body halves. Students will increase coordination, improve alignment and
generate a stronger mind/body connection. Class will include a warm-up, floor progressions
and center combinations.
Class Attire:
Female: leotard (any color), fitted pants (jazz or yoga), long sleeve shirt, no shoes, hair
neatly out of face
Males: Fitted shirt and pants, long sleeve shirt, no shoes
ADULTS

Adult Dance Troupe (ADT) 18+, offered in both ballet & modern
Class Attire: comfortable fitted clothing - leotard, fitted tank, jazz pants, tights (optional),
and ballet shoes/barefoot
Beginning Ballet
18 & up
Beginning Ballet is an introduction to ballet technique. Students will work on ballet
vocabulary, positions of the feet and arms, flexibility and coordination. Emphasis will be
placed on proper alignment, musicality, flexibility and strength. This class helps to improve
posture, strength, coordination and flexibility. This class is great exercise in a fun, low stress
environment. Class will include barré work, floor progressions and short center
combinations. No experience needed!
Class Attire: comfortable fitted clothing - leotard, fitted tank, jazz pants, tights (optional),
and ballet shoes
Intermediate/Advanced Ballet
18 & up
Intermediate/Advanced Ballet is for students with prior ballet experience. Emphasis will be
placed on proper alignment, musicality, flexibility and strength. Students will work on more
complex ballet vocabulary including turns, leaps and intricate combinations. Class will
include barré work, floor progressions and center combinations.

and ballet shoes
Intermediate / Advanced Ballet Repertory

Beginning Modern
18 & up
Beginning Modern teaches the basics of modern dance technique. Emphasis will be placed
on body awareness, moving through the space with ease, weight shifting and using
oppositional body halves. Students will increase coordination, improve alignment and create
a stronger mind/body connection. Class will include a warm-up, floor progressions and
center combinations. Great exercise!

Intermediate/Advanced Modern
Ages 18 & up
Intermediate/Advance Modern is for students with prior modern dance experience.
Students will learn complex combinations involving weight shifting, moving quickly
through space, and floor work. Emphasis continues with body awareness, movement
efficiency, weight shifting and use of oppositional body halves. Students will increase
coordination, flexibility, improve alignment, work on somatic awareness and personal
expression. Class will include a warm-up, floor progressions and center combinations.

Intermediate Jazz
Ages 18 & up
This class will explore different styles of jazz including classical and contemporary. Students
will learn the basics of jazz technique including leaps, turns and dynamic combinations.
Emphasis will be placed of rhythm, dynamics and personal style. Class will increase
student's flexibility, strength and coordination through various combinations and exercises.
No experience needed!

Intermediate/Advanced Tap
Ages 18 & up
This class is for students with prior tap experience. Students will explore intricate rhythm
tap combinations and steps. Emphasis is placed on clean sounds and musicality.
Class Attire: comfortable fitted clothing - leotard, fitted tank, jazz pants, tights (optional),
tap shoes
Hip Hop
Ages 18 & up
Get a great workout with this high-energy class. This class is for students who want to
explore street/urban style of dance. Students will learn hip hop combinations and work on
personal style & expression.
Class Attire: leotard or fitted t-shirt, fitted pants (jazz or yoga), jazz shoes or jazz sneakers.
Please do not wear street shoes. They are bad for your knees & the dance floor.
Dancercise!
Ages 18 & up
Dancercise is a dancing frenzy cardio workout, which includes easy to follow cardiovascular
movement joined with toning exercises to provide you with a body you love and exercise
that is all about having fun!
Class Attire: Comfortable athletic clothing and Tennis Shoes or Jazz Sneakers. Make sure to
bring a water bottle and towel.
